Chapter 10

Tracy texted me this morning to stop by her office first thing for a big announcement. I text Gabby that I will come over during my lunch break to look at the box before she takes it to the police station this afternoon.

I take Barley to work with me this morning. I won’t be out on the construction site, and fewer people will be around, so she won’t have to dodge any hazards. Plus, maybe she’ll give me an advanced warning of our phantom snake.

“Barley!” I let go of her leash as she runs into Tracy’s office. “Who’s a good girl?” Tracy rubs Barley’s face and ears. Barley rewards her with a sloppy kiss across the nose. “I missed you, too, girl.”

“Rosi, have a seat. I want to show you something.”

I sit across from Tracy. When Barley has received the proper amount of loving, she settles in a heap at my feet. “What do you have to show me?”

“Jakob and I had a long meeting yesterday. He’s so torn up over this project being delayed.”

“And about Brent Heath’s murder, I presume?”

“Well, of course. That goes without saying. Personalities aside, a murder is a murder, and it’s just awful. Two murders on our property this year! Can you believe it?” She sinks back into her chair as we sit silently contemplating this crazy reality.

“So, we put our heads together to come up with something positive.”

“Okay.” Sometimes Tracy’s ideas scare me like when she had Mario and I hang Christmas lights over the auditorium seating to give off a pleasing ambiance before performances, but the lighting was so poor we had guests tripping over themselves and each other to such a catastrophic effect that Vickie from Jackie’s Boutique broke her big toe.

“Plus, this idea will save money. Do you remember that big sculpture that Jade revealed she was going to hang in the entryway of the tech center?”

“The one with the history of computers? In metal?”

“Yes, that one.”

“What about it?” I already have a negative view of that overly abstract piece of art.

“We are going to cancel the order. It will save us money…”

“Great idea!” I say before realizing that she isn’t done talking.

“And we are going to hold a contest. We will commission the painting of a mural on the wall inside the entryway, something that will be welcoming and inclusive and highlight the incredibly important advancement in technology centers for the aging population in our community.”

“Wow. I think that’s an incredible idea, Tracy.”

She claps her hands like an excited toddler who’s been told she can stay up for one more story. “I hoped you would like it! What I need you to do is put together the plan in writing and spread the news—quickly—so that the painting can be completed by opening day, whenever that may be.”

“I can do that. I’d love something positive to work on. Anything else?”

“No, no. Get to work on this right away.”

“On it, Captain,” I salute Tracy and reach for Barley’s leash.

“Can she stay a little longer? I really enjoy her company.
